Preventive Dental Care PERIODONTAL (GUM) TREATMENT
Encino CA, 91436
Scaling and root planing are dental procedures that are used to get rid of the plaque and tartar deposits from the surface of the teeth and the roots, respectively. Both these procedures are widely used in the treatment of gum diseases as well as to enhance the appearance of the smile.
How are scaling and root planing performed?
The dentist would visually screen the teeth and determine whether or not the procedures would be necessary. They will be thoroughly cleaned prior to starting the treatment. Scaling involves the use of a device called the ultrasonic scaler. It is a hand-held device whose tip vibrates at ultrasonic frequencies, thereby helping the dentist dislodge the tartar deposits. A jet of water will be used to wash away the debris from the teeth surfaces.
Root planing involves a tip that looks like a hook. Since the tip of the device is inserted in between the gums and the tooth roots, it could be painful. Hence, we would administer local anesthesia to numb the teeth and the gums. Any rough edges on the root surfaces will be smoothened out to prevent the accumulation of microbes in them. After getting scaling and root planing done, patients with gum diseases express significant relief from the symptoms.
