Computer Aided Drawing and Computer Aided Manufacturing have a lot of applications in the field of manufacturing and production. But, did you know that they are being used in the field of dentistry to obtain oral restorations? Yes! They not only provide restorations that are fabricated to perfection but reduce the time involved, significantly.
With the advancements in the field of dentistry, patients expect dental procedures to be done in a shorter span of time and with utmost precision. Being able to provide such results would make any dental practice highly sought-after. Our dental practice in Encino is one of the best examples for this.
How is CAD/CAM used in dentistry?
Earlier, fabricating dental restorations such as crowns, veneers, bridges, inlays, and onlays would take at least a couple of weeks’ time. It involved screening the teeth, taking a mold of the teeth which requires you to bite into a gooey clay-like material, and sending the data to a laboratory. After this, you probably would have been asked to use a temporary restoration until the permanent one was fabricated. Just the sound of it seems so hectic!
But, now, with the availability of CAD/CAM technology, fabricating oral restoratives can be completed in just a single visit to the dentist’s office. We use a digital scanning tool to map the contour, shape, and positioning of the teeth. This will be available as a digital 3D image on a computer screen. The data from the scan will be input to a computer connected to the CAD/CAM machine. It takes the data and uses it to mill out the restoration from a piece of porcelain. Your restoration would be available in a matter of a few minutes.
What are the advantages of CAD/CAM?
- The chair-time involved in the procedure is significantly reduced.
- The precision of the milled-out restorations is excellent.
- Restorations produced using CAD/CAM are stronger than the conventional restorations.
- The 3D scan used for this purpose literally produces an unlimited number of views of the teeth.
- The restorations are long-lasting and highly durable.
