Orthopedic Orthodontics

Orthopedic orthodontics
Orthodontic treatment is largely viewed as a way to improve the appearance of the smile. However, straightening the teeth does more than enhance attractiveness. Dr. Tebbi approaches orthodontic care holistically, backed by advanced training focused on the overall balance of the oral structure. Through comprehensive methodology an optimal state of wellness can be achieved. In turn, this will be reflected in your smile.

Orthopedic orthodontics

The protocol practiced in our Encino office is designed to achieve a number of improvements. These include:• More attractive teeth
• Appropriate palate width
• Improved relationships between upper and lower teeth
• Optimal airway function
• Balanced temporomandibular joints
• Advancement of the lower jaw

Orthopedic orthodontics is the practice of guiding the growth of the oral structure as a whole. Treatment is ideal for patients aged 7 to 15 years old due to the critical timing of developmental changes. This early intervention, also referred to as functional orthodontics, can shorten the secondary phase of care, which is focused on the positioning of teeth. That being said, orthopedic orthodontics can also be tailored to adults in need of correction.

An important advantage that is gained through our comprehensive protocol is the improvement to the entire musculoskeletal system. All of the bones, joints, muscles and other structures of the body work together toward optimal health. Perfecting the alignment of teeth and correlating muscles and bones facilitates positive postural changes that support cranial balance, optimal oxygenation through air flow, and overall physical alignment.

The common thought is that orthodontics is focused on teeth. In a sense, this is often true. The approach taken with orthopedic orthodontics, however, considers the neuromuscular system that extends out from the mouth and the jaw. There is abundant literature which supports the theory that functional orthodontics enhances harmony between facial features. In doing so, this treatment can have a dramatic effect on the facial profile.

When the facial profile is poor, a person has a greater risk of medical problems such as mouth breathing, or obstructive sleep apnea, chronic head, neck and shoulder pain, migraines, dizziness, and poor hearing. The neuromuscular approach to orthodontic treatment decreases the risk for these and other conditions.
