What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a condition that affects a person’s breathing primarily when the person is sleeping. It is often defined as a cessation of breathing during the sleep process. There are several different kinds of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a very serious disorder and it can lead to many medical problems if it is not treated. Some of these problems include high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes and difficulty concentrating. There are several ways that this is diagnosed including through a physical examination and through a sleep study. When a sleep study is conducted, the doctors will evaluate a person’s breathing while he is asleep. The doctor will be able to tell if the breathing stops and how often this occurs. This is the best way to diagnose sleep apnea. When a person stops breathing during sleep it is usually caused by a stoppage of airflow. A CPAP machine helps with this because it continuously blows fresh air into the person’s nose. The person is able to breathe the entire night and this offers many benefits.
If a doctor determines that a person has sleep apnea, he may recommend getting CPAP. It is only prescribed for people with sleep apnea or other medical conditions that are similar to this. A CPAP machine uses several different components. First you have the machine that produces the air. When the machine is turned out, it offers a quiet, rhythmic sound while it pulls air to use to help the person breathe. Another component is the mask. The person must place a CPAP mask over his head. There are many different kinds of masks and you may have to try a couple kinds to find one that is comfortable for you. The mask contains a device that fits over your nose and mouth. This is where the air will blow when the machine is turned on. The mask has straps that are adjustable to help with comfort. The other part is the tube. The tube connects the actual machine to the mask. It must be connected in order for this to work. There are other components that you can add to the machine for increased comfort. One of these things is a humidifier. This will help because it will keep moisture in the air. Without it, many people find discomfort and irritation in their nose from dry air being pushed through it all night.
